California GOP Congressman Doug LaMalfa Dies at 65, Shaking an Already Narrow House Majority

Longtime Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa of Northern California has died at the age of 65, House GOP leadership confirmed Tuesday. LaMalfa, a fourth-generation rice farmer and business owner, was widely regarded as a strong advocate for agriculture, rural communities, and Western water issues during his years in Congress.

LaMalfa represented a sprawling Northern California district that includes Chico and surrounding rural communities. He served as chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus and played a key role in congressional responses to major wildfires that impacted his region in recent years.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer described LaMalfa as a devoted husband, father, and friend, calling his death a devastating loss for both Congress and rural America. House GOP campaign chair Rep. Richard Hudson also praised LaMalfa’s principled conservatism and tireless work on behalf of farmers and working families.

LaMalfa’s death immediately affects the balance of power in the US House of Representatives. With Republicans already holding one of the narrowest majorities in modern history, Speaker Mike Johnson can now afford to lose only two GOP votes on any party-line legislation. The current House makeup stands at 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats.

California is expected to hold a special election to fill LaMalfa’s seat in the coming weeks. The district is considered safely Republican, and the seat is likely to remain in GOP hands, though the temporary vacancy further complicates legislative math in Washington.

President Donald Trump ordered flags at the White House lowered to half-staff in LaMalfa’s honor and paid tribute to the congressman during remarks at a House GOP retreat, highlighting his leadership on Western and water policy issues.
