Inside the Brooklyn Jail Where Venezuela’s Former President Nicolás Maduro Is Being Held
Venezuela’s former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are now being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail known for its troubled history and harsh living conditions.
The couple was transferred to MDC Brooklyn following their capture by US forces and now face criminal charges in federal court. The facility has housed numerous high-profile detainees over the years, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, Sam Bankman-Fried, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández.
MDC Brooklyn is a pretrial detention center built in the 1990s to relieve overcrowding in New York City jails. It is currently the only federal detention facility serving the city. Attorneys, inmates, and judges have repeatedly described the jail as overcrowded, understaffed, and unsanitary.
Conditions inside the jail have been the subject of lawsuits and federal investigations. In 2019, a prolonged power outage during a winter cold snap left inmates in near darkness with limited heat, prompting a class-action lawsuit that resulted in a multimillion-dollar settlement. Reports of mold, poor food quality, limited medical care, and restricted access to legal resources have persisted in the years since.
Legal experts say Maduro is likely being housed in the facility’s Special Housing Unit for security reasons. Inmates in that unit can spend up to 23 hours a day locked in their cells, with limited movement and restricted contact with others. Access to medical and dental care has also been described by defense attorneys as inadequate.
Despite efforts by the Bureau of Prisons to improve conditions, including increased staffing and maintenance repairs, problems have continued. In 2024, multiple violent incidents occurred inside MDC Brooklyn, including fatal stabbings and assaults involving homemade weapons. The situation became so concerning that at least two federal judges declined to send defendants to the facility, citing unsafe and inhumane conditions.
Maduro and Flores appeared in federal court this week and pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges. For now, they have chosen not to contest their detention while their cases proceed.
The stark contrast between Maduro’s former life at Venezuela’s Miraflores Palace and the reality of MDC Brooklyn underscores the dramatic shift in circumstances for the once-powerful leader. Attorneys familiar with the jail say it is one of the most difficult federal detention facilities in the country, with conditions that continue to raise serious concerns.
