Small Business Spotlight: Cartel Roasting Co. Brews Community Ownership

Founded by architects and designers Jason Silberschlag and Jamie Miller, Cartel Roasting Co. is redefining what it means to be a community-centered coffee company. Built on a love of espresso, craftsmanship, and neighborhood connection, Cartel focuses on direct relationships with coffee farms to deliver high-quality specialty coffee. Now, the Tempe-born brand is taking its mission further through an equity crowdfunding campaign aimed at becoming 30% community-owned within five years. With more than 300 community investors already on board, Cartel is celebrating its supporters with a free coffee day on January 2 and continuing its expansion across Southern California and beyond—proving that small businesses can thrive while keeping value rooted in the community.
