Why Trump Wants Greenland and Why the Arctic Territory Matters Globally

President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for the United States to take control of Greenland are drawing renewed attention after recent US military action in Venezuela, turning long-standing rhetoric into a fresh source of international tension.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark located in the Arctic, covering more than 836,000 square miles. It is the world’s least densely populated territory, with about 56,000 residents, most of whom are Inuit. While largely covered in ice, Greenland is rich in natural resources, including oil, gas, and rare earth minerals that are essential for modern technology, renewable energy systems, and military equipment.

Its strategic importance goes beyond resources. Greenland sits between North America and Europe along the GIUK gap, a key maritime and military corridor linking the Arctic and Atlantic. As Arctic ice melts, new shipping routes are opening, further increasing Greenland’s geopolitical value.

Trump has said the United States needs Greenland for national security, arguing Denmark cannot adequately protect it. He has downplayed the importance of minerals publicly, though past comments from administration officials have highlighted critical minerals and resource access as major drivers of US interest.

The renewed focus on Greenland has strained relations with Denmark, a NATO ally. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has repeatedly said Greenland is not for sale and warned that any US military action against a NATO member could threaten the alliance itself. European leaders have echoed that message, emphasizing that Greenland’s future must be decided by Greenlanders alone.

Polling shows strong opposition within Greenland to becoming part of the United States, with a large majority favoring remaining outside US control. While some Greenlandic politicians support greater independence from Denmark, few support annexation by the US.

Greenland’s prime minister has called Trump’s rhetoric unacceptable and disrespectful, especially when linked to Venezuela and military intervention. Still, some local political figures say Trump’s comments about self-determination have been viewed more positively when framed as an option rather than a threat.
