One Year After Altadena and Palisades Wildfires, First Responders Honored for Acts of Compassion

Today marks one year since wildfires tore through Altadena and the Pacific Palisades, destroying homes and forever changing lives across the Los Angeles area. As communities reflect on the devastation, the focus today is on honoring the first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to protect lives and preserve what they could amid the chaos.

NBC’s Karma Dickerson revisited Lockman Lane in the Palisades, where she stood on January 7 last year watching flames consume homes one by one. While much of the street was saved, one home was deemed too far gone. Instead of retreating, firefighters made a different kind of stand.

Realizing the structure could not be saved, firefighters carefully removed family keepsakes, including a grandfather clock and photo albums. Those items belonged to the Byron family and ended up being the only possessions they didn’t lose that day.

The moment, captured on Dickerson’s cellphone, showed firefighters gently carrying memories out of the burning home. The video spread rapidly online, drawing more than 10 million views and offering the world a glimpse of humanity amid disaster.

Matt Byron and his wife had evacuated just hours earlier and heard the report on NBC4 while driving away. Seeing firefighters save those few items gave them hope during an otherwise overwhelming loss. Today, the grandfather clock still stands in their Calabasas home, damaged but restored, a symbol of resilience and gratitude.

While the family remains uncertain about rebuilding, their children hope to return one day. Though the structure would be new, the saved keepsakes ensure a connection to the past remains.

A year later, the story stands as a reminder that even in total loss, small acts of compassion can mean everything.
