One Year Later: Los Angeles County Remembers Victims of Palisades and Eaton Fires

Today marks the first anniversary of the devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires that swept through Los Angeles County, leaving lasting scars on communities across the region. Together, the fires burned more than 37,000 acres and claimed 31 lives, destroying homes, schools, and businesses.

Communities impacted by the fires are marking the anniversary with a series of remembrance events, including candlelight vigils and a flag ceremony to honor those who lost their lives. Additional events are also being held to raise financial support for ongoing rebuilding and recovery efforts.

In Pacific Palisades, some residents are gathering for a demonstration titled “They Let Us Burn.” Organizers say the protest is meant to demand accountability from state lawmakers, not only for decisions they believe contributed to the deadly fires, but also for what they describe as shortcomings in the recovery process over the past year.

In Altadena, where the Eaton Fire claimed 19 lives, the focus is both on remembrance and healing. Community members emphasize that rebuilding goes beyond replacing structures — it also means restoring a sense of normalcy and supporting neighbors who endured unimaginable loss. For many, that has included creating moments of joy and connection during a long and difficult recovery.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is expected to maintain a low public profile on the anniversary. She faced widespread criticism last year after it was revealed she was part of a presidential delegation in Ghana during forecasts of dangerous Santa Ana winds. In a statement released ahead of the anniversary, Bass said she plans to mark the day through several private observances.

One year later, the impact of the fires remains deeply felt, as communities continue to grieve, rebuild, and push forward together.
