Palm Desert Secures $5.6 Million Federal Grant to Improve School Zone Street Safety

The City of Palm Desert has secured more than $5.6 million in federal grant funding aimed at improving street safety near schools across the city. The funding will focus on enhancing streets surrounding all elementary, middle, and high schools, creating safer routes for students, parents, and residents.

City officials say the grant will be used to improve infrastructure such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic safety features in high-priority areas. The goal is to reduce risks for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers, especially during busy school commute hours.

Parents in the community say the improvements are long overdue. Salah Aldeen-alwishah , a local parent whose children will soon be entering elementary school, says safety is his top concern. “For me, it’s all about the kids’ safety,” he said. “Anything that makes school zones safer is amazing.”

Palm Desert officials emphasized that the project will benefit everyone in the city. “This will enhance our traffic safety throughout Palm Desert for pedestrians, automobiles, and bicyclists,” city staff said. “Our team has done an outstanding job identifying areas of highest importance, and children going to school are at the top of that list.”

Mayor Evan Trubee, who is also a father, said the project is personal for him. He noted that safe streets are essential for children who walk or bike to school. “My kids are growing up here and going through the K-through-12 system,” he said. “Making sure they can travel safely to and from school is incredibly important.”

City officials say construction is expected to begin sometime later this year, and residents can expect to see noticeable safety improvements as the project moves forward.
