Palm Springs International Film Festival Spotlight: Indie Film “Burt” Wins Over Audiences

The Palm Springs International Film Festival is in full swing, and one independent film is quickly becoming a standout favorite among festivalgoers. “Burt,” a low-budget but deeply personal project, is earning praise for its warmth, humor, and emotional authenticity.

Shot in just seven days on a budget of $7,000, “Burt” tells a grounded father-son story inspired by real life. The film stars Burt Berger, a Malibu musician who moved to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and spent decades quietly chasing his musical dreams. Though he never reached mainstream fame, the filmmakers say this project has become a lasting tribute to his life and legacy.

Director and co-writer Joe Joe met Berger years ago at a restaurant in Malibu, where Berger regularly played music on weekends. Over time, Joe Joe and co-writer Oliver Cooper developed a close friendship with him and felt compelled to tell his story on screen. Cooper plays Berger’s fictional son in the film, blending scripted storytelling with real-life personalities.

What makes “Burt” especially unique is its cast. Berger is not a trained actor, and neither is his real-life roommate Steve, who appears in the film as himself. Their natural chemistry and unfiltered performances have become a highlight for audiences, with critics even suggesting Steve deserves professional representation after his scene-stealing moments.

The film was shot inside Berger’s actual home, further grounding the story in authenticity. The result is a love letter to Berger’s music, relationships, and optimism, capturing the spirit of someone who never gave up on his passion.

“Burt” has two remaining screenings at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. One takes place Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. at the Festival Theaters, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. The final screening is scheduled for Friday morning at 10 a.m., also at the Festival Theaters.

Festival organizers say films like “Burt” are exactly what the Palm Springs International Film Festival aims to celebrate, stories driven by heart, creativity, and the true independent spirit.
