Trump Administration Freezes Billions in Federal Aid to California, Four Other States
The Trump administration is freezing more than $9 billion in federal benefits for low-income families across five Democrat-led states, including California.
The freeze affects three major funding streams: $7 billion for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the federal welfare program; more than $2 billion for the Child Care Development Fund; and millions more in Social Services Block Grant funding. Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York are also impacted.
The Department of Health and Human Services says the action is a response to "widespread fraud" in these states—though no evidence has been made public to support that claim. Federal childcare funding was already frozen for Minnesota separately, amid ongoing investigations into childcare centers that received benefits there.
The freeze comes as the administration continues targeting funding in states led by Democratic governors. California, the nation's most populous state, stands to lose the largest share of the affected dollars.
