Wall Street Mixed Wednesday as Dow Drops Nearly 500 Points

U.S. stocks ended Wednesday’s trading session mixed, with losses in the Dow Jones Industrial Average offset by modest gains in the Nasdaq.
The Dow fell 466 points, closing at 48,996.08, a decline of nearly 1 percent. The drop came one day after the index briefly topped the 49,000 mark for the first time, signaling a pullback following recent record highs.
The S&P 500 also finished lower, slipping 23.89 points to close at 6,920.93, a decline of about one-third of a percent. The broader index had reached a new high earlier in the week, and Wednesday’s movement reflected cautious trading as investors reassessed market conditions.
Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq bucked the trend, posting a modest gain of 37.10 points to finish at 23,584.27, up about 0.16 percent. Gains in technology stocks helped lift the index despite broader market pressure.
Market analysts say the mixed performance reflects ongoing uncertainty as investors balance strong recent momentum with concerns about valuations, interest rates, and the pace of economic growth. Trading volumes were steady as Wall Street digested recent economic data and looked ahead to upcoming earnings reports.
The New York Stock Exchange closed with investors continuing to monitor inflation trends, Federal Reserve policy signals, and global economic developments that could influence market direction in the days ahead.
