City Council to Consider Funding Nearly 200 New Affordable Housing Units Along West San Rafael Drive
City council members are set to consider funding options for two proposed affordable housing developments that could significantly expand housing opportunities in the city’s northern area.
Both projects are planned along West San Rafael Drive and together would add nearly 200 new affordable apartment units. One of the developments is proposed as an 82-unit project, while the second would include 110 units but requires financial assistance from the city to move forward.
The two proposals are at different stages in the approval process. The 110-unit project is expected to be discussed in terms of preliminary funding, as city leaders weigh whether to provide financial support to help close funding gaps. The 82-unit development, meanwhile, is facing a formal appeal from nearby property owners, adding an additional layer of review before it can advance.
City officials say the projects are part of ongoing efforts to meet state-mandated housing requirements, which call for cities across California to significantly increase the supply of affordable housing. State housing goals have placed growing pressure on local governments to identify viable sites and funding mechanisms to support new development.
Supporters of the projects argue that adding affordable housing near established neighborhoods and transit corridors is essential to addressing rising housing costs and displacement. Critics, including some neighboring property owners, have raised concerns about density, traffic, and compatibility with surrounding areas.
If approved, the developments would represent a major step toward expanding affordable housing options in the city and helping it stay on track with state housing mandates. City council members are expected to hear public comment and discuss next steps during the meeting.
