Outrage and Protests Erupt in Minneapolis After ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Woman

Officials and protesters in Minnesota are expressing outrage following the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent on a Minneapolis street, an incident that has sparked demonstrations, grief, and sharply divided reactions from local and federal leaders.

The woman, identified by the Minnesota Star Tribune as Renee Good, was killed during an encounter involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the woman was blocking an ICE vehicle that had become stuck in the snow. Noem said officers were attempting to push the vehicle free when the woman allegedly “weaponized her vehicle.”

Video from the scene appears to show one officer approaching the driver’s side door while another stands in front of the vehicle. When the vehicle accelerates forward and to the right, shots are fired. Noem said the officer discharged his weapon out of fear for his life, the safety of other officers, and the public.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly disputed that account after reviewing the video, calling the justification false and demanding ICE leave the city. Frey said the agency’s presence has made Minneapolis less safe, not more.

Former President Donald Trump defended the officer’s actions, pledging continued support for law enforcement agents. The Department of Homeland Security has labeled the incident an act of domestic terrorism.

As protests and candlelight vigils continue across the city, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged demonstrators to remain peaceful, telling residents not to “take the bait.”

The shooting has once again placed Minneapolis at the center of a national debate over law enforcement, federal immigration operations, and public safety.
