Coachella Valley Housing Coalition Mourns Death of Founding Executive Director John F. Mealey

The Coachella Valley Housing Coalition is honoring the life and legacy of its founding Executive Director, John F. Mealey, who passed away on January 5, 2026. Mealey led the organization for 34 years, serving from 1982 to 2016, and is widely credited with shaping affordable housing and community development efforts across the Coachella Valley and surrounding regions.
Mealey was hired by CVHC’s original board of directors, a group of community advocates and business leaders concerned about the shortage of affordable housing for farmworkers and low-income families. From the organization’s earliest days, he demonstrated a deep commitment to serving underserved populations, including farmworkers, seniors, individuals with special needs, and people experiencing homelessness.
One of Mealey’s early milestones came in 1986, when he led the development of the first 50-unit affordable farmworker housing community in the City of Coachella. Three years later, he launched CVHC’s Mutual Self-Help Housing Program, which allows families to take part in building their own homes, creating long-term housing stability and a sense of ownership.
Under his leadership, CVHC grew from a grassroots nonprofit into one of the most successful affordable housing developers in Riverside County and across California. During his tenure, the organization developed more than 4,500 units of affordable housing, serving retired and migrant farmworkers, service workers, seniors, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, people with mental disabilities, and others in need.
Mealey also emphasized the importance of resident services as part of healthy, stable communities. CVHC expanded programs offering low-cost childcare, after-school youth services, cultural enrichment, and scholarship opportunities, ensuring residents had access to resources beyond housing.
Colleagues say Mealey was also deeply dedicated to CVHC staff, fostering a supportive and family-oriented workplace grounded in respect and professionalism. He consistently stressed dignity and quality of life for residents, believing everyone deserves a safe and decent place to call home.
The CVHC Board of Directors and staff say Mealey’s compassion and leadership will continue to guide the organization’s mission for generations. A series of commemorative posts honoring his life and legacy will be shared on CVHC’s Facebook page in the coming days.
