New Nonprofit Fosters Pets While Owners Seek Addiction Treatment
For many Americans struggling with addiction, the path to treatment comes with an unexpected obstacle—their pets. Most treatment centers don't allow animals, forcing people to choose between getting help and keeping their companions.
Wonky's House, a new nonprofit, is working to eliminate that choice by fostering pets while their owners focus on recovery.
Founder Hail Wiggins knows the dilemma firsthand. When she needed addiction treatment, she refused to leave her dog, Wonky. Most facilities turned her away. Her family eventually stepped in to care for Wonky, giving her the peace of mind to enter treatment—but she recognized many people don't have that support system.
That experience led her to launch Wonky's House, which provides temporary care for pets whose owners are seeking treatment. The organization's long-term vision includes building a sanctuary capable of housing dozens of dogs and expanding its foster network so no one has to surrender a pet to save themselves.
Wonky's House is currently seeking foster families to care for six puppies. Those interested can learn more at wonkyshouse.org.
