Why Mass Protests Are Erupting Across Iran and What It Could Mean for US Involvement

Mass anti-government protests are sweeping across Iran, marking the most serious challenge to the country’s leadership in years and raising concerns about regional stability and potential US involvement.

Demonstrations have now spread to all 31 of Iran’s provinces and more than 180 cities and towns. What began roughly two weeks ago as protests in Tehran’s bazaars over soaring prices has evolved into a nationwide movement targeting the regime itself. Inflation has driven up the cost of basic goods such as cooking oil and chicken, with some items disappearing from store shelves altogether.

Tensions escalated further after Iran’s central bank ended a program that allowed certain importers to access cheaper US dollars. The move caused prices to surge overnight, prompting shopkeepers to shut down their businesses and sparking widespread unrest. The protests are notable because they began with bazaar merchants, a group historically seen as loyal to Iran’s ruling system.

Authorities responded by imposing a sweeping communications shutdown, largely cutting Iran off from the outside world. Human rights groups report that more than 500 protesters, including children, have been killed, with nearly 11,000 arrests. CNN has not independently verified those figures.

Protesters across the country have openly challenged Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, chanting slogans calling for his removal. Analysts say this wave of unrest feels different due to deep public exhaustion with economic hardship, corruption, and limited political freedoms.

Iran’s government, led by President Masoud Pezeshkian, has blamed foreign-backed “terrorists” for the violence and warned that some demonstrators could face severe penalties, including execution. While Pezeshkian has promoted economic reforms, real power remains with Khamenei, who controls key state decisions.

International attention has intensified as US President Donald Trump warned of possible military action if Iranian security forces continue using force against protesters. Trump said his administration is monitoring the situation closely and considering its options. Iranian officials, meanwhile, have signaled openness to negotiations, though tensions remain high following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last year.

Experts say the Iranian regime is increasingly relying on force as public trust erodes. While the outcome remains uncertain, analysts agree the protests reflect a critical moment for Iran’s future, with potential consequences far beyond its borders.
