Community Leader Shares Know-Your-Rights Message Following ICE Activity in Coachella Valley

After recent reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the Coachella Valley, a local community leader is sharing information aimed at helping residents understand their rights and prepare for possible encounters.

NDO Council Member Oscar Ortiz took to social media to outline what targeted individuals should know if approached by ICE agents. Ortiz emphasized that individuals are not required to open their doors unless agents present a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge.

Ortiz also stressed the importance of planning ahead. He encouraged families to make arrangements so personal belongings, homes, and property can be protected and transferred to relatives if someone is detained. He noted that family members may not be allowed to make contact without having key information, such as identification and visa numbers.

Ortiz shared that ensuring a trusted person has access to this information can help families navigate detention situations more effectively and avoid additional complications.

More details from Ortiz’s message are available on his Facebook page. Community members can also visit the website for TODEC at todec.org for additional resources. A hotline number is also available for those seeking more information or assistance.
