International Tourists Now Face $100 Surcharge at Grand Canyon and Other National Parks

A new year is bringing higher costs for some visitors at one of Arizona’s most iconic destinations.

International tourists visiting the Grand Canyon and several other popular U.S. national parks are now required to pay an additional $100 surcharge under a policy announced late last year. U.S. residents will not see any changes to their entrance fees.

According to the National Park Service, the policy applies to 11 of the most visited national parks across the country. Under the new rules, international visitors must pay $100 per person to enter or $250 for an annual pass, compared to $80 for U.S. citizens.

Park officials say the change has already led to confusion at entrance gates. Staff are now asking visitors additional questions to confirm residency, on top of the identification already required to purchase annual passes. Park representatives say rangers are trained to handle these checks, but acknowledge the new policy has prompted many questions from travelers.

The fee increase was introduced by the Trump administration and described as part of an “America First” approach. Supporters argue the policy prioritizes U.S. residents, while critics say it sends the wrong message to international travelers.

Some visitors say the additional cost could discourage tourism. Carsten Braun, a U.S. citizen who originally visited the country as an international tourist, says the policy undermines the welcoming spirit that draws people from around the world to experience America’s natural landscapes.

Local businesses in Arizona are also expressing concern. Some say international tourism has already declined in recent years and worry the added expense could further reduce visitor numbers, impacting hotels, restaurants, and tour operators that rely heavily on travelers from abroad.

Despite the changes, park officials say operations at the Grand Canyon remain otherwise unchanged, and they continue to provide information to visitors as they adjust to the new fee structure.
