Palm Springs Celebrates Accessible Park Renovations with Ribbon Cutting at Ruth Hardy Park

Earlier this afternoon, the City of Palm Springs held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Ruth Hardy Park to celebrate newly completed renovations aimed at making the park more accessible for children of all abilities.

City officials, families, and community members gathered to mark the milestone, emphasizing how inclusive playgrounds can have a meaningful impact on families. One local mother says renovations like these can truly change lives.

Victoria Huerta, a Palm Springs mom of three, knows firsthand the challenges of raising a child with a disability. Her eldest daughter, Shelby, has a rare condition that requires her to use a wheelchair and rely on her mother for daily activities. Huerta says Shelby’s condition has often limited her ability to experience simple childhood joys, such as playing at the park.

“As a mom, you’re limited,” Huerta shared. “There’s not really much outside the house we can do compared to what I do with my other children. It hurts. Shelby is nonverbal, so I don’t know exactly how she feels, but I hope that playing with other kids, with her siblings or her parents, will bring her joy and happiness.”

The renovations at Ruth Hardy Park total more than one million dollars and include new accessible features such as adaptive swings, spinners, ramps, and other inclusive play equipment. These upgrades ensure that children using wheelchairs or with other mobility challenges can safely and comfortably enjoy the playground.

Now, children like Shelby will have another inclusive space in the Coachella Valley where they can play alongside their peers.

During the ceremony, Palm Springs Mayor Naomi Soto highlighted the importance of going beyond basic requirements when designing public spaces.

“All of our parks are ADA compliant, but compliance isn’t enough,” Mayor Soto said. “We want to make sure our spaces are truly welcoming for children of all abilities.”

Mayor Soto also expressed hope that other cities will follow Palm Springs’ lead by investing in accessible equipment in parks, museums, and other public spaces, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate and feel included.

City officials say this renovation is just one of many accessibility-focused projects planned for the future, with additional park upgrades expected across Palm Springs in the coming years.
