Verizon Wireless Outage Disrupts Calls and Data for Customers Nationwide

Wireless customers across the country experienced service disruptions Wednesday after Verizon confirmed issues impacting voice and data services.
According to Downdetector, more than one million outage reports were generated within a 24-hour period. At the height of the disruption, over 178,000 reports were submitted in a 15-minute window. Many users reported being unable to place calls, access mobile data, or connect to service, with some phones showing SOS mode.
Verizon acknowledged the outage in a post on X, saying engineers were actively working to identify and resolve the issue. In a statement to CNN, the company said its teams remain fully deployed and focused on restoring service as quickly as possible, apologizing for the inconvenience.
Downdetector’s public data shows outage reports began increasing around noon Eastern time and gradually declined through the afternoon. The areas most affected included New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, and Dallas.
The disruption is the latest in a series of high-profile technology outages over the past year. In October, an issue involving Amazon Web Services temporarily took down large portions of the internet. In 2024, a widespread AT&T outage left customers without service nationwide and led to an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission.
Some Downdetector users also reported issues with AT&T and T-Mobile, though spokespeople for both carriers said their networks were operating normally. T-Mobile noted that while its service was unaffected, customers may have difficulty reaching people who use Verizon while the outage continues.
Verizon has not disclosed the cause of the outage. Jack Burbank, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and vice president of advanced communication technologies at Sabre Systems, said disruptions like this can result from several factors, including faulty configuration changes or software updates that fail unexpectedly.
