US Holds Off on Iran Strikes as Trump Weighs Next Move
The United States narrowly avoided launching military strikes against Iran this week, with President Donald Trump opting to hold off as he continues to weigh his options amid escalating unrest inside the country.
According to US officials, Trump emerged from a late-night Situation Room meeting believing a decision on military action could be imminent. He was reportedly deeply affected by intelligence briefings and graphic video showing Iran’s past public executions, as well as information about a planned execution of a high-profile protester.
By Wednesday, Trump appeared closer to authorizing a limited military operation, even publicly encouraging Iranians to protest and suggesting help was coming. However, senior officials were surprised the following day when Trump said he had been informed by “very important sources” that executions had been halted, signaling a pause in immediate military action.
US intelligence had not confirmed a broader halt to killings, and precautionary steps were already underway, including evacuations of non-essential personnel from major US bases in the region. Despite this, the White House said all options, including military ones, remain on the table.
Behind the scenes, US allies worked urgently to prevent escalation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly urged Trump to delay any strike, warning that Iran’s regime would not collapse quickly and that regional defenses were already strained. Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, also pushed for de-escalation while remaining in close contact with US officials.
Trump ultimately appeared persuaded by Iran’s decision to postpone the execution of one protester, which sources said served as the signal he was looking for. Still, administration officials stress that preparations continue, including the movement of US military assets, should the president decide to act.
For now, the administration is adopting a wait-and-see approach. Concerns remain over potential Iranian retaliation against US bases in the Middle East and whether limited strikes would meaningfully change conditions on the ground. As tensions persist, US officials say the next steps depend entirely on Trump’s assessment of Iran’s actions in the days ahead.
