CNN Poll: Majority of Americans Say President Trump Is Focused on the Wrong Priorities
A new CNN poll finds a majority of Americans hold a negative view of President Donald Trump’s first year back in the White House, with many saying he is focused on the wrong priorities and has done too little to address rising costs.
According to the survey conducted by SSRS, 58 percent of respondents describe Trump’s first year as a failure. Public opinion remains largely negative across nearly every major issue tested, including the economy, immigration, foreign policy, and management of the federal government.
The economy stands out as voters’ top concern, chosen by nearly twice as many respondents as any other issue. However, just over three in ten Americans currently rate economic conditions as good. Expectations for the future have also declined, with only about four in ten saying they expect the economy to improve over the next year, down significantly from just before Trump took office.
More than half of respondents say Trump’s policies have made economic conditions worse, while only about one-third believe they have improved things. Nearly two-thirds say he has not gone far enough in trying to reduce the price of everyday goods. Even among Republicans, roughly half believe he should be doing more on cost-of-living issues.
The poll also shows growing skepticism about Trump’s priorities and motivations. Only 36 percent say he has the right priorities, and just one-third believe he cares about people like them. Fewer than four in ten say he puts the country’s interests above his own, or that he understands the everyday problems facing Americans.
Trump’s overall approval rating now stands at 39 percent. While he maintains strong support within his Republican base, his approval among independents has dropped to 29 percent, and support among Democrats remains minimal. Approval has also declined among younger adults and Latino voters compared to the beginning of his term.
Concerns about Trump’s use of presidential power are also widespread. A majority of Americans say he has gone too far in using executive authority, altering cultural institutions, and cutting federal programs. While many still expect his presidency to bring significant change, fewer now believe those changes will be permanent.
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the poll suggests Trump faces challenges expanding his support beyond his base, particularly as economic concerns continue to dominate voter priorities.
