Researchers Say Leonardo da Vinci’s DNA May Be Hidden in His Letters and Artwork
Researchers studying the life of Leonardo da Vinci say they may be closer than ever to uncovering the legendary figure’s DNA.
According to a new study, scientists have been analyzing da Vinci’s handwritten letters and one of his drawings in search of genetic material. During that process, they identified a matching sequence of Y chromosomes believed to belong to a male. While researchers caution that the DNA has not been definitively confirmed as da Vinci’s, they say the findings are promising.
Pinning down da Vinci’s DNA has long been a challenge for historians and scientists. He never had children, and his original gravesite was destroyed centuries ago, leaving no known physical remains for testing. That has made it nearly impossible to establish a genetic profile through traditional means.
Researchers involved in the study say the possible DNA traces could help answer lingering questions about da Vinci’s ancestry, health and even how his remarkable talents developed. However, they stress that the study has not yet been peer reviewed, meaning the findings must still be independently verified by other scientists.
Even so, experts say the research represents a significant step forward in the effort to learn more about one of history’s most mysterious and influential figures. If confirmed, the discovery could open the door to new insights into the life of the artist, scientist and inventor whose work continues to fascinate the world centuries later.
