NASA Prepares to Roll Out Artemis II Rocket Ahead of Crewed Moon Flyby Mission

NASA is preparing to roll out its Artemis II rocket, marking a major milestone as the agency advances toward its next crewed mission around the moon.

NASA officials say the rollout is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at around 7 a.m. Eastern Time. The massive rocket will travel from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The journey spans roughly four miles and is expected to take about 12 hours to complete.

Once in place, the Artemis II rocket will undergo final preparations as mission teams work through detailed checkouts and assess overall flight readiness. An exact launch date has not yet been selected and will be determined in the coming weeks.

The Artemis II mission will carry a crew of four astronauts on a roughly 10-day journey, flying around the moon and back to Earth. NASA says it will be the closest humans have traveled to the moon in more than 50 years, marking the first crewed mission of the Artemis program.

Although Artemis II will not land on the lunar surface, the mission plays a critical role in testing systems needed for future moon landings. The flight will evaluate spacecraft performance, life support systems, and operational procedures, including docking maneuvers. These tests will take place first in Earth orbit and later in orbit around the moon.

NASA officials say the mission is a key step toward returning astronauts to the lunar surface and establishing a long-term human presence beyond Earth.
