Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival Encourages High School Seniors to Apply for Scholarships
The Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival is encouraging high school seniors to apply for its scholarship program, which helps students pursue post-secondary education opportunities.
For more than a century, the fairgrounds have been known for food, rides, and entertainment. In recent years, however, the event has also placed a strong emphasis on education. Over the past four years, CEO Chris Pickering has helped expand that focus, highlighting student achievement throughout Riverside County.
Pickering says the fair provides a unique platform for young people to showcase their talents, from artwork displayed on the walls to students performing on the main stage. He describes the scholarship program as a natural extension of that mission, celebrating the best students the county has to offer while investing in their futures.
The scholarship program supports students across Riverside County as they move on to college or other post-secondary paths. While the application is currently open, the selection process is competitive. Applicants must meet academic requirements, including maintaining a strong grade point average. Students are also required to write an essay focused on the importance of community.
After the initial application review, selected students move on to an interview process. Unofficial transcripts are required as part of the evaluation, adding another layer to the selection process.
Beyond financial support, Pickering hopes the program encourages students to eventually bring their knowledge and skills back home. He says the goal is to support motivated students who will continue to help strengthen communities throughout the desert and Riverside County.
The scholarship opportunity reflects the fair’s broader commitment to education, community involvement, and long-term growth in the region.
