Deadly High-Speed Train Crash in Spain Kills at Least 40, Prime Minister Vows Full Investigation

At least 40 people were killed and dozens more injured after two high-speed trains collided late Sunday near the town of Adamuz in southern Spain, marking the country’s deadliest railway accident in more than a decade.

According to preliminary findings, the rear of a northbound train derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track, where it was struck by a southbound train. Both trains overturned, with several cars plunging down an embankment. The northbound train was operated by private rail company Iryo, while the southbound train was run by state operator Renfe.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the crash site Monday and vowed to “get to the truth” behind what caused the collision. He announced three days of national mourning and said the government would support victims and their families for as long as necessary. Sánchez canceled an international trip to attend to the response.

Survivors described scenes of chaos, screams, and blood-filled train cars as passengers escaped through windows and over the roofs of overturned cars. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to help the injured, transporting victims to nearby hospitals, including Reina Sofía Hospital in Córdoba.

Spain’s transport minister called the crash “extremely unusual,” noting it occurred on a straight section of track that had recently undergone major renovations. Officials said both trains were traveling below the speed limit and that automated safety systems were in place, raising further questions about how the collision occurred.

Investigators are examining whether mechanical failure or track conditions played a role. Spain’s rail workers’ union has previously raised concerns about wear and tear on high-speed rail infrastructure, though experts cautioned it is too early to determine the cause.

The King and Queen of Spain, along with international leaders, offered condolences as tributes poured in from across Europe. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
