OpenAI to Test Ads on Free ChatGPT Accounts, Introduce Lower-Cost Subscription Tier
Users of ChatGPT may soon begin seeing advertisements as OpenAI moves forward with changes to its pricing and access model.
OpenAI announced Friday that it will begin testing ads on the free version of ChatGPT for adult users in the United States. The company said the ads will be part of a limited test as it explores new ways to support the platform.
At the same time, OpenAI is introducing a new subscription tier priced at $8 per month. The new plan includes upgraded features such as longer memory capabilities and additional image creation options. OpenAI says the tier is designed to offer more flexibility at a lower cost than its existing paid plans.
Current paid subscriptions from OpenAI range from about $20 to as much as $200 per month, depending on features and usage levels. OpenAI confirmed that users on those higher-tier plans will not see ads.
The move reflects a broader trend among technology companies experimenting with advertising on free services while offering ad-free experiences through paid subscriptions. OpenAI has not said how frequently ads will appear or how long the testing phase will last.
The company says it will evaluate user feedback during the test period before making any long-term decisions about expanding ads on the platform.
