Pentagon Places 1,500 Active-Duty Troops on Standby Amid Minneapolis ICE Protests

Across the country, the U.S. military is preparing for a potential domestic deployment as unrest continues in Minneapolis over federal immigration enforcement operations.

According to multiple defense officials, the United States Department of Defense has placed roughly 1,500 active-duty soldiers from the Army’s 11th Airborne Division on “prepare-to-deploy” orders, allowing them to mobilize if ordered to assist federal law enforcement amid protests. The troops, based in Alaska and trained for cold-weather operations, are on standby as tensions in Minnesota remain high.

The move follows violent clashes over the weekend in the Twin Cities, where demonstrations have erupted in response to a federally led immigration crackdown and fatal shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. One of the shootings involved the death of Renee Good during an ICE operation earlier this month, which has become a focal point for public protests and criticism of federal tactics.

President Donald Trump publicly weighed invoking the 19th-century Insurrection Act — a rarely used statute that would allow deployment of federal troops for domestic law enforcement — though officials characterized the prepare-to-deploy orders as “prudent planning” rather than a guaranteed deployment.

Local leaders have pushed back strongly against federal pressure. Jacob Frey, mayor of Minneapolis, described the prospect of active-duty troops in the city as a “shocking step,” while Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, mobilized the state’s National Guard as a precautionary measure to support public safety.

The preparations by the Pentagon do not guarantee that troops will actually be deployed. Reports indicate the standby alert is intended to give the White House options if the situation escalates — but any active deployment would require presidential authorization and likely trigger intense legal and political debate.
