Protests Continue Outside Minneapolis ICE Facility as Pentagon Prepares Troops
Protesters gathered outside the Whipple Building in Minneapolis again Sunday, marking several consecutive days of demonstrations at the federal facility serving as ICE's local headquarters during ongoing immigration enforcement operations in the city.
The protests began after ICE officer shot Renee Good last week. On Saturday, ICE announced four people were arrested at the site for refusing to disperse and were booked on federal charges. The agency said on X that those arrested threw objects, shouted profanities, and poured water on roads to create icy conditions.
President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to the Minneapolis protests. In preparation for that possibility, the Pentagon has directed 1,500 active-duty troops to prepare to deploy. The soldiers are part of two battalions from the 11th Airborne Division, according to two U.S. officials who described the notification as "prudent planning." The officials said there is currently no indication the president will use the act.
