Trump Criticizes Norway Over Nobel Peace Prize Amid Greenland Dispute

President Donald Trump escalated tensions with European leaders this week, criticizing Norway over the Nobel Peace Prize while continuing to defend his push to take control of Greenland.

According to U.S. officials, Trump sent a message to Jonas Gahr Støre after the Norwegian prime minister objected to Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on European countries that oppose his bid to annex Greenland. In the message, Trump said he no longer felt fully obligated to pursue peace after being denied the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump also questioned Denmark’s authority over Greenland, arguing that the country is unable to protect the Arctic territory from potential threats posed by Russia or China. Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, though Trump has repeatedly said U.S. control is necessary for national security.

The president’s remarks come amid growing diplomatic strain between the United States and several European nations, particularly over Greenland’s strategic importance and Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on countries that resist his plans.

Norway does not award the Nobel Peace Prize directly. The honor is decided by a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, which operates independently of the country’s government.

The comments add to a week of heightened rhetoric from the White House as debates over Greenland, Arctic security, and U.S.-European relations continue to intensify.
