California GOP Asks U.S. Supreme Court to Block New Congressional Maps Ahead of Midterms

The California Republican Party has filed an emergency request with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking justices to block the state’s newly adopted congressional district maps from being used in the upcoming midterm elections.

In its filing, the party is requesting that the court temporarily reinstate California’s previous congressional district lines while the legal challenge works its way through the appeals process. Republicans argue the voter-approved redistricting process violates federal law by using race as a factor when drawing district boundaries.

The challenge centers on the independent redistricting commission approved by voters, which redraws congressional lines following each census. Republican attorneys claim the process results in unconstitutional racial considerations, a claim that was rejected by a federal court just last week.

Despite that ruling, the emergency appeal now places the issue before the nation’s highest court at a critical moment in the election calendar. California’s candidate filing period for the midterm elections is scheduled to begin next month, raising concerns about potential uncertainty for candidates and voters if district boundaries are changed again.

State officials have defended the redistricting process, noting it was approved by voters and designed to reduce partisan influence in map drawing. It remains unclear whether the Supreme Court will take up the request or issue a ruling before election preparations move forward.
