Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake and Aftershocks Rattle Indio Hills Area

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake centered in the Indio Hills area shook parts of the Coachella Valley late last night, followed by a series of aftershocks that continued into the early morning hours.

The main quake struck just before 10 p.m. and was centered several miles northeast of Indio. According to city officials, at least six notable aftershocks followed the initial shaking. The City of Indio released a statement Monday night confirming there were no reported injuries and no known damage to buildings, roads, or water systems.

City crews monitored conditions overnight and continued inspections during daylight hours to ensure infrastructure remained safe. As of the latest update, officials say everything appears to be functioning normally.

Despite the lack of reported damage, many residents described feeling strong shaking. Some reported items falling from shelves, while others said the motion felt brief but intense. Several people said they were startled enough to move outside or seek cover as alerts sounded on their phones.

Seismologists note that aftershocks are common following moderate earthquakes and can continue for hours or even days. Residents are encouraged to remain prepared, secure loose items in their homes, and review earthquake safety plans.

Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if conditions change.
