Trump Doubles Down on Greenland Push Ahead of Davos Summit

President Trump is intensifying his push to acquire Greenland as he prepares to face European leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week. The campaign has drawn pushback from allies and raised questions about how far the administration is willing to go.

Trump declined to answer when NBC News asked if he would take Greenland by force. He dismissed concerns about European resistance, saying, "I don't think they're going to push back too much. Look, we have to have it."

The president has also issued tariff threats against countries he sees as standing in his way.

Norway's Prime Minister revealed he reached out to Trump about Greenland and received a pointed response. Trump wrote in part that "considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 wars plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace." The Norwegian leader noted that the independent Nobel Committee—not the government—selects prize winners. Trump rejected that distinction.

Republican allies sought to temper expectations of military action. House Speaker Mike Johnson said, "I don't foresee military intervention in Greenland. It's a small population of people, and I think diplomatic channels is the way to go."

Trump maintains the U.S. needs to own Greenland to counter what he describes as threats from Russia and China. The European Union is now weighing its options as tensions rise between the U.S. and its closest allies.
