World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler Ready to Tee Off at The American Express

With The American Express getting underway Thursday morning, the spotlight is firmly on world number one Scottie Scheffler, who met with media Tuesday at PGA West ahead of one of the strongest fields the tournament has seen in more than a decade.

Tim O’Brien was on site in La Quinta, where Scheffler shared his excitement about returning to the event after missing last year’s tournament due to a hand injury suffered while cooking Christmas dinner. The moment drew laughs from the media, including a lighthearted question about who handled the holiday meal this year, but Scheffler says he’s fully healthy and ready to compete.

The 2026 American Express features its largest and most star-studded field in years, with three of the world’s top players competing across PGA West’s Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club. Play begins Thursday morning, with Scheffler starting his tournament at La Quinta.

Despite his dominance over the past two seasons, Scheffler says not much has changed in his preparation. He didn’t overhaul his swing during the offseason, though he will debut a new TaylorMade driver. For Scheffler, the appeal of The American Express is its timing and the scoring challenge it presents.

Scheffler noted that the tournament provides a clear early-season gauge, requiring players to stay sharp and make birdies to contend, with low scores often determining the cut line. Known for its favorable conditions but demanding precision, PGA West remains a true test — even for the best golfer on the planet.

Scheffler enters the week as a heavy favorite, and all eyes will be on La Quinta as he begins his 2026 campaign. NBC Palm Springs will have continuing coverage throughout the tournament.
