$16,000 in tools stolen from contractors rebuilding Altadena homes after Eaton Fire

Contractors working to rebuild homes damaged by the Eaton Fire in Altadena are facing an additional setback after thousands of dollars in equipment was stolen from a construction site.
Altadena resident Jim Osterling said thieves took roughly $16,000 worth of tools and equipment belonging to contractors who were rebuilding his home. Osterling’s property sits less than half a mile from where the Eaton Fire began, and he said his neighborhood has seen multiple incidents targeting construction sites.
According to Osterling, the theft was brazen. He said one worker witnessed suspects breaking into another truck nearby and briefly chased them away. Osterling described the situation as frustrating and discouraging for residents already dealing with the aftermath of the wildfire.
He also noted that neighbors have reported similar thefts as rebuilding efforts continue across the community. Osterling expressed concern that fear or uncertainty surrounding ongoing immigration enforcement operations in Los Angeles County could discourage some contractors from reporting crimes.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Altadena Station says it has not seen an overall increase in crime tied to the rebuilding efforts. Deputies reported just two residential burglary reports in December 2025, compared to 12 during the same month the previous year. Officials say patrols have been increased, with extra deputies checking construction sites and nearby homes.
Investigators believe the $16,000 theft may have been a crime of opportunity rather than part of an organized pattern. Osterling is urging neighbors and contractors alike to stay alert and secure equipment whenever possible as recovery work continues.
