Elizabeth Holmes Asks President Trump for Early Release from Prison

has asked Donald Trump to grant her an early release from prison, according to a clemency request filed with the Department of Justice.

Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos, was convicted in 2022 on multiple counts of defrauding investors and began serving her 11-year federal sentence in 2023. Her current release date is set for December 2031, but a commutation would allow her to leave prison nearly six years early.

A federal appeals court last year upheld both Holmes’ conviction and the $452 million in restitution she and former Theranos president Ramesh Sunny Balwani were ordered to pay to victims. Balwani is also serving a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted on similar fraud charges.

Holmes rose to prominence in Silicon Valley after founding Theranos while still a college student. The company claimed its blood-testing technology could diagnose serious illnesses using just a few drops of blood, a promise that helped the startup reach a valuation of $9 billion and attract high-profile investors and political figures. Those claims later unraveled following investigative reporting that questioned the accuracy and reliability of the technology.

Holmes is currently incarcerated at a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. The White House does not comment publicly on clemency requests, and any decision on a pardon or commutation rests solely with the president.

The request comes as President Trump has issued several high-profile pardons and commutations during his second term, drawing renewed attention to Holmes’ case. In recent months, activity has resumed on Holmes’ social media account, including posts praising Trump’s health care policies, though it is unclear who is managing the account.
