Jury Acquits Former Uvalde School Police Officer in Robb Elementary Shooting Case
A Texas jury has cleared former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police officer Adrian Gonzales of all 29 counts of child endangerment or abandonment stemming from the May 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.
The verdict was read in court after jurors deliberated for just over seven hours, bringing an end to a three-week trial that examined the actions of the first officer to arrive at the scene of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the attack.
Prosecutors argued Gonzales failed to follow his active shooter training and did not attempt to confront the gunman despite having time and information that could have changed the outcome. They told jurors the case was about accountability and the duty to act when children are in imminent danger.
The defense countered that Gonzales did not see the shooter upon arrival and instead focused on evacuating students while assessing a chaotic and rapidly evolving situation. Attorneys warned that a guilty verdict could discourage law enforcement officers from responding decisively in future emergencies for fear of criminal prosecution.
Jurors heard testimony from dozens of witnesses, including parents, teachers, law enforcement officials, and experts on active shooter protocols. Gonzales did not testify in his own defense, though jurors did hear a recorded interview in which he acknowledged making mistakes but said he waited for backup before entering the school.
The trial marked the first criminal case connected to the Uvalde shooting. Former school district police chief Pete Arredondo has also pleaded not guilty to related charges, with his case still pending.
The verdict is likely to reignite debate over police responsibility during active shooter situations and the limits of criminal accountability for officers responding under extreme pressure.
