Major Winter Storm to Bring Ice, Heavy Snow, and Dangerous Cold to Nearly Half the U.S.

Major Winter Storm to Bring Ice, Heavy Snow, and Dangerous Cold to Nearly Half the U.S.

A powerful and far-reaching winter storm is set to impact large portions of the United States, with forecasters warning it could be one of the most extreme winter weather events in years. The storm is expected to affect more than two dozen states, bringing a dangerous mix of heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, and bitter Arctic cold.

The system is forecast to stretch more than 1,500 miles, from the Plains across the South and into the Northeast. Travel disruptions are expected across the storm’s entire path, with hazardous road conditions and delays at major airports likely. Utility officials are also preparing for widespread power outages, particularly in areas expected to see significant ice accumulation.

Forecasters say the most serious threat will be freezing rain in parts of the South. Ice buildup can weigh down trees and power lines, increasing the risk of long-lasting outages. Areas from northern and eastern Texas through the lower Mississippi and Tennessee valleys, northern Georgia, the Carolinas, and parts of Virginia are considered most vulnerable. Major metro areas including Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, and Little Rock are in the potential impact zone.

Several states have already declared states of emergency, including North Carolina and South Carolina, allowing officials to mobilize resources and pre-treat roads. Governors across the region are urging residents to prepare for possible power loss and to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

To the north of the ice zone, heavy snow is expected to fall from the southern Plains through the Ohio Valley and into parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Some locations could see six inches to a foot of snow, depending on the storm’s track. Forecasters caution that small shifts in the system could significantly change snowfall totals.

Compounding the storm’s impacts is an intense blast of Arctic air. Temperatures are expected to plunge well below average, with some areas seeing readings 30 to 40 degrees colder than normal. Wind chills in the upper Midwest could fall as low as 30 to 50 degrees below zero, creating life-threatening conditions in a matter of minutes.

Meteorologists warn that snow and ice will be slow to melt due to the extreme cold, meaning dangerous conditions could linger into early next week.
