Prince Harry Emotional in Court, Says British Tabloids Made Meghan Markle’s Life “a Misery”
fought back tears in a London courtroom as he concluded his testimony in a civil lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail, accusing the tabloid of unlawfully invading his privacy and inflicting emotional harm on his family.
Testifying at the High Court in London, Harry said the newspaper’s coverage “made my wife’s life an absolute misery,” referring to Meghan Markle. The case centers on allegations that Associated Newspapers Limited, publisher of the Daily Mail, used illegal methods such as phone tapping, voicemail interception, and deceptive information gathering to produce stories about him.
Harry is one of several high-profile figures, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, who are suing the publisher. The trial is expected to last nine weeks. The newspaper group has denied all allegations, maintaining its journalists relied on lawful reporting methods and arguing the claims were filed too late.
The duke’s testimony focused on 14 articles published between 2001 and 2013, which he said caused significant distress and offered no public interest justification. He told the court that as a working royal at the time, he felt unable to challenge the coverage due to the long-standing royal principle of “never complain, never explain.”
During cross-examination, lawyers for the publisher suggested some information could have come from Harry’s social circle rather than illegal activity. Harry firmly rejected that claim, stating he was not friends with journalists and would not have shared such private details.
As he wrapped up his evidence, Harry described the legal battle as a “recurring traumatic experience,” saying he pursued the case to seek accountability not only for himself but for others impacted by tabloid practices. He has previously won legal actions against other British tabloids, resulting in apologies, damages, and admissions of wrongdoing.
Prince Harry is expected to continue attending the proceedings in support of other claimants as the trial moves forward.
