Snap Settles Youth Safety Lawsuit Days Before Trial, Avoids Court

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has agreed to settle a youth safety lawsuit just days before the case was scheduled to go to trial, avoiding a high-profile courtroom showdown in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit was filed by a 19-year-old plaintiff who alleged that Snapchat’s design features are addictive and contributed to harm to her mental health. The case is part of a broader wave of legal challenges accusing major social media platforms of knowingly creating products that negatively impact young users.

While Snap reached a settlement, the lawsuit also names several other major tech companies, including TikTok, Meta, and YouTube. No settlements have been announced with those companies, meaning the trial against them is still expected to move forward next week in Los Angeles.

The companies named in the lawsuit have repeatedly denied claims that their platforms cause addiction, arguing there is no scientific consensus directly linking social media use to addictive behavior. They have also emphasized tools and policies they say are designed to promote user well-being, particularly for younger audiences.

The Snap settlement comes as thousands of similar lawsuits continue to work their way through courts across the country. Many of those cases have been filed by school districts and state governments, alleging social media platforms contribute to rising mental health challenges among children and teenagers.

Several of those broader cases are expected to proceed later this year, setting up what could be a defining legal battle over the responsibility of tech companies in shaping online experiences for young users.
