Sportscaster Michele Tafoya launches Republican bid for U.S. Senate in Minnesota
Longtime sportscaster and conservative commentator Michele Tafoya has officially launched a Republican campaign for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, giving the GOP a well-known candidate in a state facing political turbulence tied to immigration enforcement and upcoming leadership changes.
Tafoya announced her candidacy in a campaign video, pointing to her decades covering major sporting events as preparation for political leadership. She said her experience taught her the importance of accountability and preparedness, themes she plans to emphasize on the campaign trail.
In her announcement, Tafoya highlighted concerns over alleged welfare fraud in Minnesota, saying government corruption is growing and pledging to protect taxpayer dollars. She also outlined other priorities, including lowering the cost of living and advocating for policies she says protect women’s sports.
The race has drawn heightened attention since Democratic Sen. Tina Smith announced her retirement, opening the seat for the first time in years. At the same time, Sen. Amy Klobuchar is considering a run for governor, a move that could further reshape Minnesota’s political landscape.
Republicans have viewed Minnesota as a potential opportunity after narrow presidential margins in recent election cycles. That interest has intensified amid protests across the Twin Cities following the federal government’s deployment of immigration and border agents to the state. Demonstrations escalated after an immigration officer fatally shot Renee Nicole Good during a traffic-related confrontation, further straining relations between state leaders and Washington.
The Justice Department has since subpoenaed multiple Minnesota officials as part of an investigation into whether state and local leaders interfered with federal immigration enforcement.
Tafoya, who left broadcasting in 2022 to pursue conservative political media, has been outspoken in her criticism of Minnesota’s Democratic leadership and protest activity tied to immigration enforcement. Her entry adds another high-profile name to what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched Senate races of the 2026 election cycle.
