Community Clothing Drive at SunLine Transit Agency Supports Desert Best Friends Closet

NBC Palm Springs is partnering with the SunLine Transit Agency for a community clothing drive benefiting the Desert Best Friends Closet, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping residents in need find professional and semi-formal clothing for important life moments.

The drive is taking place outside SunLine’s administrative building on Harry Oliver Street in Thousand Palms, where donations have already begun rolling in early this morning. Organizers say the goal is to completely fill a SunLine bus with donated items by the end of the day.

Desert Best Friends Closet supports individuals facing barriers to employment by providing appropriate attire for job interviews, along with job readiness services such as resume and cover letter assistance. According to program director Stephen Cunningham, donated clothing goes directly to clients participating in the organization’s Bridge to Employment program, helping them feel confident and prepared as they enter or re-enter the workforce.

The clothing drive is also collecting prom dresses and ball gowns. Prom dresses will be given to local high school students at no cost, helping young women participate in prom season without the financial burden. Ball gowns are also used to support military families attending formal events, including the Marine Corps Ball.

Organizers say donations can be gently used or brand new and include suits, dresses, ties, and other professional or semi-formal attire. A generous donation earlier in the day included a tailored suit, highlighting how items no longer needed can make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.

The clothing drive runs today from morning through the afternoon, and community members are encouraged to stop by, clean out their closets, and help support neighbors across the Coachella Valley.
