Iconic 1960s Orbit Gas Station in Sacramento Moves Toward Historic Landmark Status

Iconic 1960s Orbit Gas Station in Sacramento Moves Toward Historic Landmark Status

A distinctive piece of Sacramento’s midcentury history could soon receive official protection. A former Orbit gas station in north Sacramento is moving closer to being designated a local historic landmark, a step that preservation advocates say could save the iconic structure from demolition.

The building, located on Northgate Boulevard near Garden Highway in Sacramento, was constructed in 1963 and is known for its striking space-age design. With triangular canopies and a parabolic roof, the station reflects Googie architecture, a style inspired by the optimism and futuristic vision of the Space Race era.

City preservation officials say the structure is one of the few remaining examples of this architectural style still standing in Sacramento. The Orbit brand later went out of business, and the property was eventually used as an auto sales lot. In recent months, it has sat vacant and fenced off, prompting renewed interest from neighbors and preservation groups.

The Sacramento Preservation Commission has unanimously voted to recommend adding the building to the city’s register of historic resources. If approved by the City Council, the designation would make the property eligible for preservation grants and tax incentives, while also making demolition more difficult.

Community members have expressed hope that the building could find new life as a neighborhood gathering space, such as a café or community hub, while still preserving its original design.

The recommendation now heads to the Sacramento City Council for final consideration, marking an important step toward ensuring that this midcentury landmark continues to be part of the city’s landscape for years to come.
