The Shared Plate Nonprofit Aims to Fight Food Insecurity
The Shared Plate, focused on providing meals to people experiencing food insecurity in the Coachella Valley is now a nonprofit.
The event is scheduled to take place this afternoon at the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs and will be attended by members of the Palm Springs City Council, along with the board of directors of The Shared Plate.
According to a press release, Mayor Naomi Soto and a representative from The Shared Plate will address attendees, followed by photo opportunities. After the remarks, meals will be shared with members of the community, marking the nonprofit’s first public event since becoming independent.
The Shared Plate has served as a feeding program through the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs for the past seven years. Church leaders say the decision to transition into an independent nonprofit will allow the organization to expand its reach, seek additional funding, and serve more residents in need.
City officials and organizers say food insecurity remains a pressing issue locally, and the nonprofit model will help The Shared Plate grow beyond its original scope while continuing its mission of community support.
