Qatari Jet Being Converted to Air Force One Expected to Be Delivered by Summer 2026

The Air Force says a luxury jet donated by Qatar and currently being converted into a new Air Force One is expected to be delivered by summer 2026, marking a major milestone in the highly classified project.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the timeline, saying the service remains committed to expediting delivery of the VC-25 “bridge aircraft” to support the presidential airlift mission. It remains unclear whether the aircraft will be immediately operational upon delivery or if additional testing will be required before it can carry the president.

The Boeing 747 aircraft, described by President Donald Trump last year as a gift from Qatar, began its extensive modification process in 2025. The work involves stripping the plane down to its frame and rebuilding it with advanced communications, security systems, and defensive capabilities required for Air Force One missions. Much of the work remains classified due to national security concerns.

Military officials have previously said the aircraft must be thoroughly inspected to ensure it is free of surveillance devices and hardened against electronic threats. It must also be equipped with specialized features, including the ability to refuel mid-air and support presidential command and control functions during emergencies.

An agreement signed last year between the United States and Qatar described the donation as unconditional, with no payment to Qatar. However, the U.S. government is expected to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the conversion. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink previously estimated the total cost would likely be under $400 million.

The Air Force says it is coordinating with other government agencies to ensure the aircraft meets all security and mission requirements. The delivery timeline comes as the current Air Force One fleet continues to experience maintenance challenges. Earlier this week, an electrical issue forced a presidential aircraft to turn back shortly after departure, prompting the president to switch to another government plane for international travel.
