Shared Plate Feeding Program Celebrates New Nonprofit Status, Expands Mission to Fight Hunger
A longtime local feeding program in Palm Springs is celebrating a major milestone in its mission to fight hunger. The Shared Plate, operated out of the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs, has officially become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization—opening the door to future grants and expanded services for those in need.
The celebration took place inside the church’s Fellowship Hall, where volunteers and community members gathered to recognize the program’s growth and impact. Officials with the Shared Plate say the organization fed thousands of people across the Coachella Valley last year, and with its new nonprofit status, the goal is simple: feed twice as many people in the coming year.
Becoming a nonprofit allows the Shared Plate to qualify for funding opportunities that were previously unavailable. Leaders say those resources will help ensure no one is turned away.
“We’re seeing so much need, and we want to help everybody,” a program leader said. “We don’t turn anyone away. We also give people a bag lunch to take with them, so it’s really like a double meal when they come here.”
For Lydia Martinez, the Shared Plate holds special meaning. Once a recipient of the program’s services, Martinez now volunteers her time to help others.
“I know how it is to be homeless,” Martinez said. “Any donation can go a long way. I talk to people and try to give them hope because I’ve been there.”
Martinez says the church provides more than meals, offering hygiene supplies and clothing for men and women—resources that can make a significant difference for those struggling.
“These people really do need help,” she said.
Community leaders also attended the event, including Naomi Soto, who emphasized the importance of neighbors helping neighbors.
“A good neighbor starts with sharing a meal,” Soto said. “Volunteer service can come in so many ways, and we’re grateful to be here showing people how they can get involved.”
Organizers encourage anyone interested in supporting the Shared Plate to consider volunteering or donating food or supplies. More information on how to help can be found through the program’s outreach platforms The Shared Plate's website.
