Trump Returns From Davos With Greenland Framework as Jack Smith Faces Capitol Hill Grilling
President Donald Trump is returning to the United States following meetings in Switzerland that produced a new international peace initiative, a framework for future discussions on Greenland, and lingering friction with key allies.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, world leaders joined Trump as he signed a charter creating a new Board of Peace. The board is intended to oversee the next phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, though Trump suggested it could evolve into one of the most consequential international bodies ever created. He also pledged to work alongside the United Nations on broader global efforts.
Much of the attention in Davos, however, focused on Trump’s renewed push regarding Greenland. The president argued the Danish territory is critical to U.S. national security, remarks that unsettled several European leaders. After discussions with Mark Rutte, Trump said the two sides now have a framework for future talks on access to the Arctic region, claiming the United States would gain broad military access. Rutte later clarified that ownership of Greenland was not discussed.
While Trump focused on foreign policy overseas, political battles intensified on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers questioned former special counsel Jack Smith about his now-closed investigations into Trump, including efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Republican lawmakers argued the investigations were politically motivated, while Smith pushed back, stating his work was guided by evidence, not politics. He testified that investigators believed they had proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump engaged in criminal activity. Tensions ran high throughout the hearing.
Trump responded by calling Smith’s investigation a political scam and, in a Truth Social post, said he hopes Attorney General Pam Bondi will review Smith’s actions. When asked whether he believes the Justice Department could pursue action against him, Smith said he does believe that possibility exists.
