Electric Air Taxi Gives New York City a Glimpse of Future Travel with 7-Minute Trips to JFK
The future of air travel touched down in New York City Friday, giving residents a firsthand look at what could soon transform urban transportation.
An all-electric air taxi was on display at Pier 76, where members of the public were invited to explore the aircraft. According to Vertical Aerospace, the vehicle is designed to carry travelers from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport in just seven minutes.
The air taxi features four seats, an intercom system for communicating with the pilot, and a display screen showing speed, altitude, and distance to the destination. Vertical Aerospace says the aircraft takes off vertically, can fly up to 100 miles, and operates nearly silently thanks to its electric design.
Company officials estimate the cost of a ride to JFK would be about $300.
Representatives say their goal is to make the service as cost-effective as possible, with hopes of expanding access over time.
While the air taxi won’t be available to the public until 2028, it’s already inspiring curiosity among visitors, including local students who had the chance to see the aircraft up close.
In a city known for congestion and long commutes, many see the concept as a potential solution to easing travel frustrations — and a preview of what’s possible as transportation technology continues to evolve.
