Massive Winter Storm Slams Two-Thirds of the U.S., Brings Dangerous Snow, Ice and Bitter Cold
A powerful winter storm is impacting nearly two-thirds of the United States, creating hazardous travel conditions and prompting emergency declarations across multiple states.
Live images from Buffalo, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio show heavy snowfall continuing into the evening hours, with visibility reduced and roads rapidly deteriorating. The massive system stretches from Texas all the way to Maine, placing millions of Americans under winter storm alerts.
According to CNN correspondent Michael Yoshida, parts of the Northeast could see up to two feet of snow by Monday, with New York City expected to receive more than a foot. In Washington, D.C., snowfall has mixed with sleet, creating dense, compacted conditions that make clearing roads even more difficult.
“It is brutal. It is bone-chilling, and it is dangerous,” Yoshida reported.
The storm has already forced closures of several interstate highways, while Oklahoma officials say some areas recorded more snow in a single hour than they have seen in years.
Elsewhere, ice and extreme cold are creating additional hazards. A water main break near a highway outside Charlotte, North Carolina coated power lines and streets in ice, while residents in Tennessee shared images of completely frozen driveways and roadways.
Frigid temperatures are also complicating cleanup efforts, as road crews warn that extreme cold can damage equipment and reduce the effectiveness of road treatments.
Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor local alerts, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the storm continues its path across the country.
