EU Opens Investigation Into Grok Over AI-Generated Explicit Images of Women and Children

The European Union has launched an investigation into Grok, the AI chatbot on Elon Musk's social media platform X, over concerns it was used to generate sexually explicit images of women and children.
The European Commission says it's examining whether X properly mitigated risks associated with the tool and whether the platform complied with EU digital safety laws. Grok's image generation feature drew widespread criticism after users discovered it could produce explicit or revealing images of real people, including public figures.
X initially responded to the backlash by limiting the image generator to paying subscribers. Following continued outcry, Grok now blocks users from creating revealing images of real people altogether.
It's unclear what penalties X could face if regulators determine the platform violated EU law, or how long the investigation will take.
