Literacy Nonprofit Hosts Documentary Screening Fundraiser in Indio Tonight

Read With Me Volunteers is holding a fundraiser screening of "Sentenced" at the Indio Performing Arts Center tonight at 6 p.m. The 70-minute documentary, co-produced and narrated by NBA star Stephen Curry, explores the issue of childhood illiteracy through the perspectives of adults and children who never learned to read.
Read With Me Volunteers was founded in 2004 at Mecca Elementary School. The organization now has more than 500 volunteer tutors serving 27 elementary schools in the Coachella Valley and two in Nevada, reaching over 4,200 children from low-income, limited English-speaking households. Volunteers commit one hour per week to help students build reading comprehension and English-speaking skills.
Tickets are $49 and include the film, a Q&A session, lite bites catered by students from Rancho Mirage High School's CAFÉ (Culinary Arts Food Education) Academy, and access to a silent auction.
